Woke up and found my license plates gone. What now?
Regardless of whether your plates are lost or stolen you will need to submit, in person at any DMV office, a Certification of Lost License, Permit, or Plates along with form MV-78B (a police report) which you can only obtain from a police station. Cost: $18.
While driving through the woods I slammed into a log. Consequently, my front license plate is twisted like a street-theatre contortionist, making it unreadable. Do I need to replace it?
Yes. You must visit a DMV office in person. Bring your registration, both front and back license plates, and cash, check, or credit card to pay an $18 replacement fee.
Are customized plates available for all vehicles?
No. You can order customized plates only for motorcycles, passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and trailers.
If I order an organization plate do I have to contact the organization?
Yes and no. Some organizations require their approval, whereas others don't. Those that require permission may ask you to prove your qualifications to display their plate.
The NY DMV provides a list of available organization plates and application instructions.
If I change my mind after ordering customized plates online can I cancel my order?
Nope. Once you submit an online order it is considered final. If you want to discuss your options call the DMV Custom Plate Unit at (518) 402-4838.
If I remove a vehicle from the road with historical license plates can I keep the plates?
Most DMV offices will store historical plates, but not vintage plates. Each DMV office has a different policy on storing plates so call ahead.
When you hand the plates in you'll receive a receipt that cleverly states "Stored at Local Office." Keep this receipt in a safe location. You'll need it to retrieve your plates if you decide to return your car to the road or to register another vehicle.
Does New York offer antique license plates?
Yes, but under the name of Historical Plates. To qualify, your vehicle must be at least 25 years old. In some cases, the DMV will consider younger cars if it determines the vehicle possesses historical, classic or exhibit value. To apply for historical plates, sign the owner's certification statement on Form MV-440H and follow the instructions on that form.
If I move out of state, do I need to surrender my license plates?
Yes. Surrender the plates at any DMV office for a $1 fee, or mail the plates back at no charge.
