Page OverviewTop None for the Road
The None for the Road program was created to generate DWI awareness in New Mexico. It is a basic prerequisite for anyone between 18 and 24 years old seeking to obtain a New Mexico driver's license. The self-taught class is offered by University of New Mexico Continuing Education.
This is how it works:
- Fill out your address information on this form and send it along with a $20 money order to:
- UNM Continuing Education
- DWI Awareness Program
- 1634 University Blvd. NE
- Albuquerque, NM 87131-4006
- Once the information is received, you will be mailed a workbook.
- When you receive the workbook, you will need to head to a participating library (a list is available on the back of the form) and borrow a None for the Road video.
- Watch the program, and when you feel ready, take the test in the workbook.
- When your return the video to the library, you will need to get a signature from the librarian on a form provided in the workbook.
- Mail the test and the form with the librarian's signature to the above address.
- When your documents are received, a Certificate of Completion will then be issued and mailed back to you.
This may seem like a hassle, but drinking and driving is a serious topic in New Mexico. The None for the Road program is just another step on the way to spreading awareness to young drivers about the dangers and the consequences of making a dire choice after a night (or day) of fun.
Top How to Lose Your License 101
It's a lot easier to lose your license than it was to get one in the first place. Here are some common ways to have your license suspended:
- Under New Mexico law, having a driver's license and using it to operate a vehicle is giving "implied consent" to be tested for drugs and/or alcohol if you're pulled over. Refusing to do this will automatically result in the loss of your license.
- If you are convicted of driving while intoxicated (DWI), your license will be suspended for up to one year.
- Departing the scene of an accident not only produces a license suspension but can also involve jail time.
- Applying for a license by fraudulent means or giving out fake information to the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) is not a good thing. This will make it so you forfeit the privilege of getting a license. If you already have one, you will lose it.
- If you do not settle a judgment levied against you for causing damage or injury in an accident, you will face suspension or revocation of your license.
- Modifying your license or using a phony license to obtain alcohol is also a good way for the state to revoke it.
Top Accident Reporting
Being in an accident of any type can easily send you into a disoriented tailspin, especially if there is an injury. But it is imperative to try to remain as calm as possible under the circumstances.
You will need to report the accident to the state patrol or to the local police department (that is, if they do not arrive on the scene anyway). Plus, there are all the insurance concerns.
Hopefully no one was injured and the damage was minimal. But regardless, you must take care of a few things right away:
- If possible, get your vehicle out of traffic.
- If someone is hurt, dial the police and aid them in any way possible.
- Note any damage.
- Swap information with the other drivers involved. This includes license and registration information.
- If the damage is believed to exceed $500, you will need to report the accident within five days.
