If you prefer to pack, load and unload yourself, hire a self-service mover who just handles transporting your belongings to your new home. Or to save cash and handle the move on your own, rent a moving truck and call on a few friends to lend a hand with the loading and unloading.
Change Your Address
Moving to or from major cities such as Albuquerque, Las Cruces and Roswell can be very exciting. But no matter where you move to, first change your address with the United States Postal Service. You’ll also want to notify your bank, credit card companies, health providers, utility companies (such as trash, telephone, cable, water, electricity and Internet providers) and any other businesses that handle important tasks for you. Lastly, remember to update the New Mexico MVD with your change of address so your NM drivers license and vehicle registration info remains accurate. You might need to surrender your license plates or update your vehicle title if you are moving out of state.
You’ll also want to notify the IRS, using the IRS Change of Address Form 8822. Plus, some moving expenses are tax deductible. To help deduct moving expenses, also fill out IRS Form 3903.
Update Insurance Policies
Contact your health insurance and property insurance agents a few weeks before your big move. Then consider comparing auto insurance rates online before calling your car insurance agent to update your insurance policy. That way when your auto insurance agent offers you a new insurance rate based on your new location, you can make an informed decision on whether you want to stick with your current provider or shop around for lower insurance rates. For example, insuring a car in Santa Fe might be more expensive than buying coverage for a vehicle in smaller New Mexico towns.
