We cover topics such as how to order standard and specialty plates in our License Plates and Placards section.

But, below are the answers to some common questions for convenience.

I just want a standard plate. Do I get to choose between the new balloon plate and the yellow plate?

You certainly do. Just make your request when your first register your vehicle.

Is there someplace I may view all the types of special plates that are available?

Yep. The Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) has a special plate page devoted just to this. The page includes detailed information on who can order the plates and how much they cost.

I just sold my car. Should I surrender my plates?

Good question. You can register them with another vehicle, providing you do so within 30 days of the sale. If not, yes, surrender the plates by taking them to a MVD field office, where they can be recycled.

You are not required to surrender your plates if you move out of state, but it's not a bad idea. See our article about moving out of state for more information.

How do I order disability plates and placards?

Because ordering disability plates and placards varies given the situation, there isn't a quick answer for this; however, The Unofficial DMV Guide thoroughly covers this issue in our Drivers with Disabilities section.

My plates are damaged. How do I replace them?

Just go to a MVD field office with your current registration card. You'll be issued standard plates for $17 each.

You may also order replacement plates by calling (888) MVD-INFO.

My plates were stolen. How do I replace them?

This is an easy process. Just follow the instructions for replacing a damaged plate.

What's the skinny on antique plates?

Instead of antique plates, New Mexico has horseless carriage plates and year-of-manufacture plates.

Only vehicles 30 years or older are allowed to display a year-of-manufacture plate, provided:

    • The plate is authentic and New Mexico-issued
    • The plate number has not already been assigned
    • The MVD, after inspecting the plate, deems it is in suitable condition

To apply, submit a Year-of-Manufacture Plate application along with a $27 registration fee.
