History of DMV

The Motor Vehicle Security and Customer Service Act (signed into law in January 2003) abolished the Division of Motor Vehicle Services (DMV) and created the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC).
Since then, the MVC has been through genuine change, providing an improved level of security and customer service at every facility where motorists living in the state do business with the organization to register a vehicle or obtain a driver license.
New Features Added
The MVC now offers many online services through its official Web site, meaning fewer in-person visits to the agency.
The MVC also has been cited by a national organization, the Coalition for Secure Driver's Licenses, as having one of the most thorough and secure identification verification policies for issuing documents in the entire country.
Digital Driver License
In addition to improvements in document security, the MVC now issues the nation's most counterfeit-proof driver license. The state's new Digital Driver License (DDL) has more than 20 embedded security features, some of which are known only to law enforcement officials.
By June 2008, the current photo and non-photo driver licenses will expire, and they will be completely replaced by the digital license, which is more durable than the "old" license and identifies minors quickly.
While these changes are important for a variety of safety and customer service-related reasons, the MVC feels that they are only the beginning of the improvements that are to come for New Jersey's 6 million motorists.
