NEW HAMPSHIRE CAR INSURANCE REQUIREMENTS

New Hampshire is unusual in that you are not required to have automobile insurance. This policy reflects the state's traditionally conservative philosophy of minimized regulation; however, while New Hampshire prefers that drivers carry liability insurance if at all possible, certain drivers are required to carry it.

Drivers Required to Carry Automobile Insurance

Some drivers are required to carry liability insurance because they have convictions or violations that trigger the requirement. If you have been convicted of DWI or accumulated many DMV Demerit Points, the state will mail you a notice with details regarding insurance requirements.

Form SR-22 and Insurance Requirements

If you are one of the drivers required to purchase liability insurance then the state will request a Form SR-22 from your insurance carrier or broker. The SR-22 is the proof that you have liability insurance. Most first offense DWI convictions require liability insurance for three years; second offense requires five years.

If you are applying for restoration of your suspended license, you may have to buy liability insurance and the SR-22 will be sent to the DMV. Most traffic violations will result in the DMV requesting a SR-22 from you.

Because most people carry a lien on their vehicles, you probably already have automobile insurance. If you are driving a car that isn't collateral for a loan, you have the choice to buy liability and collision insurance. In New Hampshire, even though insurance is not required by the DMV, most drivers have insurance to protect them in the event of an accident.
