Registration Renewals

When to Renew
You must renew your Nebraska registration once a year, before it expires. The month in which you must renew usually depends on the month in which you purchased your vehicle. You'll get a renewal postcard.
No Postcard?
If you don't receive your postcard, your registration certificate will have the expiration date printed on it, and it is during that month that you must renew your registration.
If you still can't figure out when to renew, contact the county treasurer.
Two or More Vehicles
Note that if you own two or more vehicles, you may be able to work out a plan in which you can renew all registrations during the same month. Talk with your county treasurer about it.
How to Renew
Once it's time to renew your registration, you may do so in person or through the mail.
In Person
Head to your county treasurer's office with:
- Your expired registration certificate.
- An original copy of the document that shows you have adequate financial responsibility.
- The appropriate fees (see below).
You'll get everything you need (renewed registration certificate, plates, and tags) right there in the office.
By Mail
Obtain your county treasurer's mailing address, then gather and mail the same documents and fees as listed above.
You'll get everything you need (renewed registration certificate, plates, and tags) sent to you by mail.
Fees
In Nebraska, vehicle registration fees vary from vehicle to vehicle, depending on the make and model.
The Nebraska DMV provides a handy online tool, the Motor Vehicle Tax Estimator, to help you estimate your registration renewal fees.
Of course, you can always contact your county treasurer's office for specific fees.
