License and Permit Restrictions

If you're a driver with a medical condition,don't worry. In many cases you can still drive, with one of these code restrictions on your driver's license:

• B: Corrective Lenses

• G: Limited to Daylight Only

• F: Outside Mirrors

• C: Mechanical Aids on Vehicle

• E: Automatic Transmission

• U: Automatic Turn Signals Req'd

• Q: No Interstate Driving

• Y: Two Lane, Two Way Traffic Only

• W: No One Way Streets or Roadways

• V: Geographical Area (Specify)

• X: Maximum Speed Restriction (Specify)

• Z: Special, as Specified by DMV

Note that the Z restriction is a sort of "catch-all." A breath alcohol ignition interlock device always results in a Z restriction.

Vision Requirements

To obtain a driver's license in Nebraska, you must take a vision test and have at least 20/40 vision in both eyes, together as well as separately. Based on the results of your vision exam, the DMV may place restrictions on your license.

Hearing Considerations

All hearing requirements are based on the type of license for which you're applying. Some require the F restriction to have outside mirrors on your vehicle. The Nebraska DMV recommends contacting your local driver license exam station for details specific to your situation.

Seizures

If you're an applicant who experiences seizures:

1. You must be seizure-free for three months when you apply.
2. You may need to obtain documentation from your doctor stating that it's safe for you to operate a motor vehicle.

If everything checks out, the DMV may still issue certain restrictions on your license.

And, as always, it's best to contact your local driver license exam station before giving them a visit, to make sure you're completely prepared.

Aging Drivers

In Nebraska, there is no age limit on driver's licenses, nor is there an age at which drivers must start renewing their licenses more often.

However, Nebraska does provide the GrandDriver Program to educate aging drivers, as well as their loved ones and friends, about the special considerations aging sometimes brings to the table―or, roadways.

The GrandDriver Program provides information about:

• Facts about older drivers.

• How physical changes can affect driving.

• Nebraska programs designed to help evaluate and rehabilitate aging drivers.

Reporting an Incompetent Driver

Along with the GrandDriver Program, Nebraska has developed a process to help concerned drivers report incompetent drivers.

For details about the entire process and its purpose, refer to Nebraska's Reporting Medically Impaired or Unsafe Drivers. To confidentially report a driver:

1. Send a letter to the Director of the Department of Motor Vehicles identifying the problem driver and the details of his or her driving. Make sure you sign and date the letter.
2. Wait for further instructions. The DMV will review your letter and the driver in question, and may contact you for more information.
3. If the DMV may send the driver a certified letter informing him or her of an appointment at a driver exam site. The driver will need to:
   • Bring vision and medical reports. The exams must take place within 90 days prior to the appointment.
   • Take the written and road tests again.
4. The future of the driver's license depends on the results of all exams. The driver can appeal his or her vision or medical results with the DMV's Medical Advisory Board. If the driver fails the written or road tests, he or she can retake either or both at any time.

Testing Accommodations

Sometimes drivers with disabilities need special accommodations when the test for their licenses.

If your medical condition requires testing accommodations, contact your local driver license exam station with details. An employee will assist you so that both you and the examiner will be prepared before you arrive.
