History of DMV
The Nebraska DMV is composed of eight different departments:
- The Highway Safety division is responsible for enforcing traffic laws. In addition, they educate the public about issues such as the importance of wearing seatbelts, complying with child restraint laws, obeying the posted speed limits, and following the state's regulations for teen drivers.
- The Driver and Vehicle Records division helps Nebraska residents obtain vehicle titles, registrations, and license plates. They also process requests for information on driving records.
- The Driver License Examining division oversees the testing requirements for drivers who wish to apply for a new license. They administer the vision screening, written exam, and driving test at each of the state's 99 examining locations.
- The Legal division is responsible for processing lifetime license revocations, handling Lemon Law claims, and conducting administrative hearings for the Nebraska DMV.
- The Financial Responsibility division monitors driver compliance with the state's auto insurance requirements. In addition, they process driver license suspensions and applications for drive permits.
- The Motor Carrier Services division administers four programs for interstate motor carriers: the International Registration Plan, International Fuel Tax Agreement, Single State Registration System, and Bingo Stamps.
- The Information Systems division is responsible for overseeing the department's computer systems and software. They work to insure the security and privacy of your personal information.
- The Administration division oversees the activities of the entire department.
Changing with the Times
Through the years, the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles has shown a continuous commitment to serving the needs of the state's residents. For example, the state's motor vehicle registration system was implemented in 1905. At that time, drivers created their own leather license plates and sent the identifying information to the Secretary of State. Since the Nebraska DMV began producing license plates in 1915, there have been a number of changes to reflect the public's design preferences.
Today, the Nebraska DMV makes it a priority to protect residents against fraud and the misuse of their personal information. In 2003, Nebraska implemented a digital driver license system to reduce fraud and prevent license tampering. At the time, those licenses were considered to be the most secure in the nation.
