Dealer-related Information

The Nebraska Motor Vehicle Industry Licensing Board is the state agency in charge of regulations related to the business of buying and selling motor vehicles.

Members of the board are appointed by the governor for three-year terms. The chairperson of the board is the director of the Nebraska DMV. Other members include one trailer dealer, one factory representative, one new motor vehicle dealer from each of the three congressional districts, two used motor vehicle dealers, one motorcycle dealer, and one member of the general public.

Dealer Licensing

The Nebraska Motor Vehicle Industry Licensing Board issues the following types of licenses:

• Dealer license

• Salesperson license

• Auction dealer license

• Wrecker/salvage license

• Finance company license

• Manufacturer, distributor, or branch license

Depending upon the activities of your business, you may need to apply for more than one license if you wish to legally buy and sell motor vehicles in the state of Nebraska.

Applications for each type of license are available online. To print the applications, you must have the free Adobe Reader software.

Consumer Complaints

If you, as a consumer, believe you have been treated unfairly by a motor vehicle dealer or salesperson, you may file a complaint with the Nebraska Motor Vehicle Industry Licensing Board. After the complaint and all supporting documentation has been received, the office will conduct an investigation in accordance with the provisions outlined in the state's Motor Vehicle Industry Licensing Act.

Before you file a formal complaint, you should try to resolve the issue with the motor vehicle dealer. If you are unable to agree on an acceptable solution, you should fill out the Consumer Complaint Form. In addition, the Nebraska Motor Vehicle Industry Licensing Board recommends that you consult with an attorney to determine if you have any additional legal rights regarding the matter.
