Whenever private individuals arrange to buy and sell motor vehicles, they must complete a Bill of Sale. This form provides the seller with a receipt for the transaction and gives the buyer legal documentation of his/her purchase.
As a courtesy, the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles has created a Bill of Sale form that you may use for your motor vehicle transactions.
Buying a Used Car? Order a Vehicle History Report First
Ordering a vehicle history report is a critical step in the used car buying process. Failing to do so could result in the purchase of a vehicle with frame, flood, or fire damage, odometer rollback and more. Stay on the safe side, and order a vehicle history report before you buy a used vehicle.
Top Bill of Sale Requirements
No matter which form you choose to use, your Bill of Sale should contain the following essential information:
- The seller's full legal name, address, phone number, and signature
- The buyer's full legal name, address, phone number, and signature
- The make, model, and year of the vehicle being sold
- The vehicle's VIN number
- The purchase price
- The date of the transaction
- The signature of a Notary Public who has witnessed the transaction
Use a ballpoint pen to complete the Bill of Sale form and write as neatly as possible. An illegible form will make it difficult for the Nebraska DMV to complete your vehicle's title transfer.
If you are selling a vehicle that you own with your spouse, remember that the person who has his/her name on the title should complete the Bill of Sale. For example, if a married couple is selling a car that is only registered in the wife's name, she needs to be the one to sign the Bill of Sale.
