Point Reduction in North Dakota

Determine Your “Course” of Action
In North Dakota you have three ways to remove points from your driving record:
- One point removed for every three months of violation-free driving.
- Complete a state-approved defensive driving course for a three-point reduction.
- If you're cited for a violation with a penalty of five points or less, you may choose to complete a defensive driving course in lieu of points being added to your driving record. You must notify the court when posting bond and provide a course completion certificate to the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) within 30 days.
The defensive driving course option is available once every twelve months.
Complete a ND Driving Safety Course
Before enrolling, verify with the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) that the defensive driving course that you're considering is sanctioned. You will not receive credit if you provide a completion certificate from a program not recognized by the state.
Submit Requirements to the Court
After completing the four-hour defensive driving course, you'll receive a completion certificate. Submit this to NDDOT's Driver License Division to receive credit. In most situations, you'll be informed by the defensive driving program on how to submit the certificate. If you have questions, call the Driver License Division at (701) 328-5000.
Remember, if you've enrolled to prevent points from a violation of five points or less from being entered on to your driving record, you have only 30 days to provide proof of course completion to the NDDOT.
Check Your North Dakota Driving Record
Check your driving record after submitting a course completion certificate. Verify the point total. Immediately notify the NDDOT if you did not receive point reduction credit. An accumulation of points on your record could possibly cause the suspension on your ND driver's license.
