NORTH DAKOTA CAR INSURANCE REQUIREMENTS

Insurance, as stated in 39-08-20 of the North Dakota Century Code, is mandatory for all vehicle owners. Failure to keep insurance on a registered vehicle is illegal and may, depending on the circumstances, lead to a tangle of financial and legal reverberations.

As a licensed North Dakota driver you are required to minimally carry:

  • $25,000―Bodily injury or death of one person in any one accident.
  • $50,000―Bodily injury or death of two persons in any one accident.
  • $25,000―Injury to or destruction of property of others in any one accident.
  • $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident―Uninsured motorist coverage.
  • $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident―Underinsured motorist coverage.
  • $30,000―Basic no-fault (personal injury protection).

Your insurance company―which must be authorized to operate in the state―will mail you an insurance identification card that will serve as your proof. You must carry this, just like your driver's license, with you at all times when behind the wheel.

    Penalties

    • If caught for the first time without insurance, you will be fined $150, and depending on the circumstance have either six or 12 points slapped on to your driving record.
    • If you are caught for any subsequent insurance violations within an 18-month span you will be fined $300 and again have either six or 12 points added to your driving record. In addition, you will be required to provide proof to the state for a three-year period that you do indeed have insurance. Failure to do so will lead to an immediate suspension. And, you must also surrender your original license and obtain a duplicate ($50) with a special notation stating that you are required to provide proof of insurance on file with the state.
