Registration Renewals

When to Renew
Once your vehicle is registered in North Carolina, you are required to renew your registration annually. The month that the renewal is due depends on the month that you originally registered the vehicle.
Notification to Renew
Before your registration expires, you should receive a reminder card in the mail. You do not need this card to renew your registration, but it is handy because it provides all the identification information you will need to renew. If you don't receive a notice to renew, you can request it by calling (919) 715-7000.
How to Renew
To renew, fill out a registration renewal application form and pay the appropriate fee. You can renew in person, online, or by mail.
In-Person
To renew in person, visit any vehicle and license plate renewal office and if you don't have a reminder card, bring your license plate number and insurance information.
Online
To renew online without your reminder card, have your license plate number and the last five digits of your title number handy (you can find this on your old registration).
By Mail
If you renew by mail, include a $1 fee for postage. Mail your renewal application to:
- NC Division of Motor Vehicles
- Post Office Box 29620
- Raleigh, N.C. 27626-0620
Once the DMV receives your renewal application and fees, they will issue you new stickers to put on your license plate.
