Compare Insurance Rates in 3 Easy Steps

    1. Start Your Quote:

    Selling Your Vehicle

You'll need to provide the buyer with the following documents:

    • A notarized title
    • A lien release, if applicable
    • An Odometer Disclosure Statement (signed by you and the buyer) if the vehicle is less than 10 years old

After the sale, remove the plates from the vehicle.

Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability

If you don't plan on transferring the plates to another vehicle, you must surrender them to your local Vehicle & License Plate Renewal Office. To avoid legal hassles, do this before canceling your insurance.

    Bill of Sale

Though a bill of sale is not mandatory, Division of Motor Vehicle (DMV) officials strongly encourage keeping one for your own records. You can download a copy of this form from our Bill of Sale page.
