State-Approved Courses

Traffic schools are available throughout Mississippi. Contact your local Department of Public Safety location for a list of approved schools.

You may consider enrolling voluntarily to possibly lower your insurance costs or get a traffic ticket dismissed. Of course, you may also be ordered to enroll based on a traffic violation you commit. Therefore, make sure to get information from the court about which state-approved course you can take.

The local courts also decide what benefits you may receive from attending one of these schools.

Insurance Premiums

Contact your own insurance company to determine if you qualify for a discount if you attend traffic school. Many companies offer discounts on your auto insurance premiums based on your age, and may offer a discount based on your driving record.

Also ask the amount of the discount; sometimes the discount is not enough to offset the cost of the course.

Traffic Tickets and Point Reduction

If you are given a traffic ticket, check with the local court to see if attending a traffic school is an option to have the ticket dismissed. Traffic school may erase that ticket and improve your driving at the same time.

You'll also want to check with local courts if you've accumulated points on your driving record. Attending a traffic school may qualify you for a point reduction, depending on the violations and your total record.

Driving Under the Influence

Alcohol and drugs are a dangerous combination with driving, and can be a costly mistake in numerous ways.

If you are convicted of driving under the influence (DUI), you will pay heavy fines, steep reinstatement fees, may face jail time and lengthy suspension of driving privileges, and you will likely be ordered to attend traffic school and/or treatment programs.

Check with the local court for a list of schools in your area to help meet these requirements.

Teen Drivers

Mississippi has a detailed program for teen drivers, so be sure to check out DMV.ORG's special Mississippi Teen Drivers section to learn about driving requirements.
