Buckle for Life

Mississippi wants to get you buckled up! The "Buckle for Life" program promotes seatbelt usage and educates consumers about the proper use of child restraints. Approximately 27 Mississippi children die each year in automobile accidents, mostly from misuse or lack of safety restraints.

Mississippi law requires children younger than four to ride in federally approved child safety seats. Children four to eight years of age must use a safety restraint system appropriate to their age and weight. Mississippi wants every driver and passenger buckled, and children 12 or younger riding in the back seat.

The state encourages you to call 1-800-9-BUCKLE (28-2553) if you see a child who is not wearing a seatbelt or not in a car seat. When you call, you'll need the following information:

  • Date and time you saw the child unrestrained
  • Where the car was located when you saw it
  • Car tag number
  • Approximate age of child or children
  • What the child was doing when you saw him/her

Be sure your own children are secured properly. Visit a Child Seat Safety Inspector for a proper fitting of your own child's seat. You can locate a fitting station near you, and some have Spanish-speaking technicians.
