To qualify for an unrestricted license, your vision must be at least 20/40, with or without glasses, and have a peripheral vision of at least 105 degrees.

If your vision falls below these standards, you must visit an eye specialist and return the specialist's report to the Driver and Vehicle Services Driver Evaluation Unit. Based on the findings of this report, you will either be given the thumbs-up to drive, or be recommended for a restrictive license.

There are no driver license restrictions for hearing impaired drivers.

Top Seizures

• When applying for a driver license, you must make it known if you suffer from any medical conditions that can cause seizures, blackouts or loss of consciousness while driving.

• If you own a license or permit and are diagnosed with a medical condition that could cause seizures, blackouts or loss of consciousness, you must send a medical statement within 30 days of being diagnosed to the Driver and Vehicles Services Driver Evaluation Unit.

• After suffering a seizure, you must be seizure-free for six months before your license can be reinstated. If the seizure was alcohol- or drug-induced, wait an entire year for license reinstatement.

As of January 2008, there are no elderly driver restrictions or accelerated license renewal laws.

Top Reporting an Incompetent Driver

There are many factors that can make someone an incompetent driver, including dementia, eye problems, seizures, or someone with drug side effects. If you know someone who is becoming a danger behind the wheel, you can report it.

Send a letter that includes:

• The driver's full name and date of birth.

• The driver's license number, if possible.

• An explanation detailing why you believe this driver is unsafe to drive.

• Your name, address and phone number.
