License Plate FAQs
We cover topics such as how to order standard and specialty plates in our License Plates and Placards section.
Here are the answers to some other common license plate questions:
Is there someplace that I may view all the types of special plates that are available?
Yep. The Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) has a page which lists the different categories. Just click on a heading to view the plates available within that category, and receive detailed information about the specific plates.
How much do license plates cost?
That varies. But a standard plate costs $4.50 for one, and $6 for two. You'll also have to tack on an $8.50 service fee.
How do I order disability plates and placards?
There isn't a quick answer for this, but we cover the issue in our Drivers with Disabilities section.
When will my car license plates be replaced?
Unless you request duplicate plates sooner, your plates will be replaced every seven years. The same is true for dealer license plates.
Plates for all other types of vehicles will not be replaced, unless, of course, you request a duplicate plate.
How many plates am I required to have on my car?
Two. The same applies for vans, trucks, pickups, and busses. Motorcycles and mopeds just need one plate.
There are a few other exceptions to the two-plate rule.
How do I renew my plates/registration?
You have three ways to renew: in person, by mail, or online.
Where do I put the renewal stickers on my car license plate?
The sticker displaying the month goes on the lower left corner of the plate. The sticker showing the year goes on the lower right corner.
How quickly do I need to put the stickers on my plates?
The sooner, the better. By law, you're required to have them on your plates before the 11th day of the month after your registration expiration date.
My plates were stolen. How do I replace them?
To replace your plates or stickers, complete the Application for Duplicate Plates and/or Stickers and take it to a Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) motor vehicle office. You must be listed on the vehicle's registration card to apply for duplicates.
The fee varies according to the number of plates needed.
You may also replace your plates online while renewing your registration. Under the Plate Options heading, choose your type of plate, and show why you need to replace it.
How do I replace damaged plates?
Follow the same procedure for replacing stolen plates.
Does Minnesota offer antique license plates?
Yes. Minnesota offers antique plates in four categories: Pioneer, Classic, Collector, and Street Rod. Each one can be applied for by completing an Application for Special Plates. You can find plate qualifications on DMV.ORG's License Plates & Placards page.
Do I have to surrender my Minnesota plates after relocating to a new state?
Minnesota does not require you to surrender your license plates, though you may do so at any branch location.
