Top Driver's License and ID Card

To change your name on your driver's license or ID, bring proof of your name change to a Driver and Vehicle Services location. Acceptable documents include the marriage certificate, divorce certificate, or court order demonstrating the change. Also have your current license handy.

You are not required to present an updated Social Security card, but it's not a bad idea to change that document as well. Visit Social Security Online for information about affecting the name change. If you present a Social Security card as proof of identity, it should list the new name. If it does not, you'll need to demonstrate the name change via a marriage certificate, divorce certificate, or court-ordered document.

Updated licenses are issued for $11.75.

    Top Title

To change a name on a title, complete a new title application. Bring it along with the legal proof of your name change (see examples above) to a DVS location. If there's a lien involved, you will need to receive permission from the lienholder to change the name.

Corrected titles are issued for $6.25, plus the $8.50 filing fee.

    Top Registration

Changing the name on the title will change the name on your registration, too. You can't get a new registration without getting a new title. You'll only have to pay the fees for the new title.
