Minnesota motorists must carry insurance coverage for their vehicles to be legally registered in the state. Minnesota's vehicle insurance requirements are listed online by the state's Division of Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS).
Minnesota also provides more information about automobile insurance with the PDF handout, "What You Need to Know about Auto Insurance." (You will need the free Adobe Reader to download and read PDF files.)
When registering your vehicle in Minnesota, you must provide your insurance company's name, as well as your policy number. Vehicle registration in Minnesota means you are attesting to the fact that you have proper insurance coverage.
Minnesota's No-Fault Act requires owners of registered vehicles to maintain no-fault insurance. This law also makes it illegal for vehicle owners to drive or permit other drivers to operate their vehicles without insurance, with a penalty of losing driving privileges, fines or imprisonment.
Minnesota drivers must carry proof of insurance in their vehicles so they can provide it if requested by a police officer. Proof of insurance may be in the form of an insurance identification card, a written statement, or the current insurance policy itself.
For more information on insurance requirements and rules in Minnesota, go to the state's Department of Commerce Web site.
