State-Approved Courses

Michigan provides a list of state-approved driving schools, but you should also check your local listings to locate a school near you. Contact each school to determine costs, schedules, and benefits.

You may also want to ask about online courses; remember to check with the Michigan Secretary of State about whether they're acceptable.

Teen Drivers

Michigan offers a two-part driver's education system for teen drivers. DMV.ORG provides all the details in our special Teen Drivers section, so be sure to check it out.

Mature Drivers

The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) offers a Defensive Driving Course for drivers 50 years old and older. This eight-hour course is taught in two four-hour sessions and costs $10.

Ticket Dismissal and Point Reduction

Michigan courts normally do not offer traffic school as a way to reduce points on your driving record or reinstate your license, but depending on the circumstances, your age, and the number of violations, traffic school could be part of your penalty if convicted of a traffic violation.

Insurance Discounts

There may be a time when you consider attending traffic school, perhaps to reduce your auto insurance premiums.

Check with your own insurance company to determine if taking a course would help lower your insurance premiums. Compare the costs of the course to that discount; sometimes the cost of the course is more than the discount, unless that course will be valid for discounts over a period of years.
