How do I replace my license plate?

To replace a damaged or stolen plate, head to a Secretary of State (SOS) branch office. Be sure to have your registration card or license plate number with you. You'll be issued a replacement plate, a new registration, and a new year tab for $5.

However, the vehicle owner or a member of the owner's family living at the same address must make the request. Or, the owner may complete an Appointment of Agent form and allow a representative to receive the plates.

How do I order disability plates and placards?

How you order disability plates and placards in Michigan depends on whether they will be permanent or temporary as well as whether they will be red or blue.

How do I renew my plates?

You can renew your Michigan plates in person, by mail, by phone, or online; however, the actual renewal process you can use depends on a variety of factors including whether or not your information is correct, your PIN, and even which payment methods you can use.

How much do standard plates cost?

The cost of standard plates is absorbed in the registration fee, so there isn't a special cost just for a license plate.

How much extra is it to personalize a standard plate?

The short answer is $30, as well as an extra $15 at every renewal period.

Does Michigan offer antique license plates?

Instead of antique plates, the state offers historical plates. To qualify, your vehicle must be at least 26 years old, owned as a collector's item, and be used only for parades, exhibitions, car club activities and any other function that might snare public attention.

Michigan does offer the option of dual registration if you also want to use your antique for everyday functions.
