Duplicate Registrations and License Plates in Maine
If your vehicle registration certificate, license plate, or registration sticker has been lost, stolen, or damaged, you should contact the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) to request a duplicate.
Whenever your registration documents are missing or damaged beyond the point of recognition, you should apply for a replacement as soon as possible. If you drive without your registration certificate, license plates, or registration sticker, you run the risk of receiving traffic citations, paying fines, and having your vehicle impounded.

NOTE: If you suspect that your license plate or stickers have been stolen, you should file a police report with your local law enforcement agency.
If you lost your registration certificate or if it has become damaged, you can request a duplicate in person or online.
To request a duplicate vehicle registration certificate online, you'll need to:
- Have a current, valid registration.
- Have more than 7 days remaining on your current registration.
- Not have an SR22 car insurance requirement.
Regardless of whether your apply for a duplicate registration certificate online or in person, you generally need to provide the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) with:
- Your license plate number and plate type.
- Your name as it appears on the registration.
- Your birth date.
- The name of your business, if applicable.
If you are applying for a replacement online, you'll need a printer to print your new vehicle registration certificate.
If your Maine license plates are lost, damaged, or stolen you will need to fill out a Notice of Loss of Number Plates and Request for New Plates (Form MV-9).
Take the form, along with your registration, to your local Maine BMV office.
You may be able to apply for replacement tags by mail. You should contact the Maine BMV before you send your application by mail. If you are able to apply for a replacement by mail, you may need to send the application and a copy of your current vehicle registration to the following address:

The replacement fee is $5 per plate, or $5.50 with registration stickers.
The Maine BMV makes it easy to replace a lost registration sticker. You can generally go to the town office where you registered your vehicle or to any local BMV office.
You'll typically need to provide the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) with a copy of your current registration and payment for the replacement fee.
Remember, it's important that you have your current vehicle registration stickers attached to your license plate. If you do not, there is a good chance that you will be pulled over by a law enforcement officer and receive a traffic citation.
