Point Reduction in Maine

Determine Your “Course” of Action
Maine gives you two options for having demerit points removed from your driving record: completing a driver safety course and maintaining a clean driving record.
Maintain a Clean Driving Record
As an incentive for maintaining a clean driving record (no convictions, suspensions or revocations), Maine will award you one violation-free credit at the end of the calendar year. You are limited to four credits. These credits can be used, if needed, to offset any subsequent demerit points on your driving record.
Complete a ME Driving Dynamics Course
Completing a Maine Driving Dynamics Course, or a similar state-approved course, will remove three demerit points from of your ME driving record.
In most instances, it's your choice on whether to enroll. But for more severe cases, such as OUI, you may be ordered to attend as a license reinstatement requirement.
Submit Requirements to the Court
Upon completing the course, you will need to provide the BMV with your completion certificate. In most instances, the school will submit your completion certificate for you. Either verify this, or ask to deliver the completion certificate yourself. Points will not be removed from your record until the BMV receives the completion certificate.
You are limited to this point-removing option once every 12 months.
There are no restrictions on how many times you can attend. You are even welcome to enroll with a clean record. Completing the course with a spotless record will earn you three credit points against any future demerit points.
Keep in mind that point-removal is only limited to non-commercial drivers.
Check Your Maine Driving Record
After completing the course, verify whether the demerit points were removed from your driving record. Otherwise, you could have your driving privileges erroneously suspended for too many points, and/or face an unwarranted jump in your car insurance premiums.
Get an Auto Insurance Discount
Points on your driving record could have an adverse affect on your car insurance premiums. You always have the option to shop around online for a new auto insurance provider by comparing rates from a variety of car insurance companies.
