- Download any needed forms and applications, print them, and fill them out before going to a BMV office.
- Make sure you have proper ID that will be accepted by the BMV (some examples).
- Make sure you have enough money―cash, checks, or credit cards―to cover all your fees.
- Make sure to take a number when entering a BMV office before sitting down to wait.
How do I become an organ donor?
You can choose to become an organ donor when signing up for your first license or renewing your license. This is an optional choice. If you become an organ donor, your license will be marked with the words "organ donor" and a graphic.
Am I required to take driver's education before I can apply for a driver's license?
If you are 18 or older, you are not required to complete driver's education to obtain a Maine license. However, you must successfully complete a written exam, an eye exam, and a road test―and adequate training will help you do this.
Do I have to supply my own car for the road test?
Yes. You must have your own vehicle and be accompanied by a licensed driver over 20 who has been licensed for more than two consecutive years. A driving school will often supply the car for the road test.
What do I do if I fail either the written or driving part of the test?
You can retake the exams. Should you fail either the written or road test, you will be instructed at that time on how to proceed with applying for a retest.
How do I renew my driver's license?
You will receive a notice in the mail four to six weeks prior to expiration with instructions about how to renew your license. If you have a digital license and meet other eligibility requirements, you may now renew online. Or you may visit any BMV office.
How do I get a license to drive a motorcycle?

How do I obtain a copy of my driving record?
The Maine BMV offers an online service so that you can obtain a copy of your record immediately. There is a $7 fee for each record, payable by MasterCard or Visa. You can also obtain your driving record by mail from the BMV; this method costs a little less.
