To change your address with the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV), you can use a simple online form. If you know your Maine driver's license number and your car registration information, you can change the address on both records at the same time.

There is no cost for changing your address. If you do not want to use the online form, you can process an address change at your nearest BMV office or call (207) 624-9000.

It's the Law

Maine law requires you to notify the secretary of state when you change your address. This notification must be made within 10 days of when you relocate. When you process your address change through the BMV, the BMV will automatically notify the secretary of state on your behalf.

Updating the Address on Your License

Be aware that notifying the BMV that you have moved merely updates the records the bureau has on file for you. The driver's license you hold does not get updated unless you take an extra step.

You can get a replacement license with a new address through the BMV's Rapid Renewal online system. (Although it's called "Rapid Renewal," the service is also where you go to order a replacement license.)

If you have a digital license―the one with the pink highlight and the digital photo―simply complete the online information, including your new address, and order a replacement license. You'll need to pay the $5 fee via MasterCard or Visa.

You'll also need a printer hooked up to the computer you use to go online. A temporary license will be issued (you can just print it out), and a new license will be mailed to you within two to three weeks.

Of course, you may always order a duplicate driver's license showing your new address by appearing in person at a BMV office.

Changing Your Name

For a name change, you cannot use any online service. You have to visit a BMV office and fill out a form. You must also present a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order that shows the name change.
