Moving Out of State in Massachusetts
Keep Your Massachusetts Driver's License
Unless your new state requires you to hand over your old Massachusetts license once you apply for a new one, you can either hang onto it as a souvenir or destroy it.
However, before you make a decision, check out the Federal Trade Commission's information about identity theft.
Return Your Massachusetts License Plate
When you move to a new state, cancel your Massachusetts registration and return your license plates either in person to your former full service RMV branch office or by mail to:
- Registry of Motor Vehicles
- Attn: Express
- P.O. Box 55889
- Boston, MA 02205-5889
The RMV will provide you with information about any registration refund for which you may be eligible, and the appropriate plate return receipts. Be sure to provide your former Assessor's Office with a copy of the plate return receipt in order to get a excise tax adjustment.
