Point Reduction in Massachusetts
Massachusetts Point Reduction
Completing a Driver Retaining course does not remove surchargeable events from your MA driving record.
Maintaining a clean driving record is the only way surchargeable events can be erased. Points will only be removed if:
- The driver has fewer than 3 surchargable events in the previous 5 years.
- The last surchargable event is at least 3 years old.
- You have at least 3 years of driving experience.
- Any out-of-state violations in the last 5 years were reported to the Merit Board.
This is only available to you after 3 years of safe driving. Points expire after 6 years.
Out of state violations are compared to surchargable events in MA. The points assigned will be based on what the surchargable event would be in MA.
