Changing Your Name

Driver License and ID Card
Before you can change your name on your Massachusetts driver license or ID, you'll need to change your name on your Social Security card. Visit Social Security Online for more information about that process.
After you've received your new card, visit your local Registry of Motor Vehicles to apply for a new license. You'll need to complete an Update Form and pay the $20 fee to have a new license issued.
Registration
The process to change your name on your vehicle registration is a bit different. You'll need to visit your local insurance agent to pick up an RMV3 form. Both you and your agent will complete the form.
Submit the completed form, along with certified documentation of your name change, to your local RMV. Documentation includes a marriage certificate, divorce decree, adoption or naturalization papers, or any other court order.
The fees vary for changes to the registration, but transactions are $15.
Titles
To change your name on your vehicle title, you'll need to complete an Amendment Application and submit it with the appropriate documentation and fees (see below) to:
- Registry of Motor Vehicles
- Title Division
- P.O. Box 55885
- Boston, MA 02205-5885
Certified copies of the documents showing your name change include marriage certificates, divorce decrees, adoption or naturalization papers, or other court documents.
Enclose a check or money order for $25 made out to the RMV.
