Although you need to apply for a new certificate of title only when you buy or sell a vehicle, you need to renew your vehicle registration on a regular basis. In Louisiana, the Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) issues automobile license plates for two years and truck license plates for four years―after which you need to renew them.

Expiration and Reminder Notices

Your vehicle registration will expire on the last day of the month in the year indicated on your registration certificate. As a courtesy, shortly before your registration is set to expire, the OMV will send out a reminder notice to the address last recorded on your vehicle registration record. However, you are still responsible for renewing your registration on time even if you don't receive the reminder notice.

Renewing in Person or by Mail

You can renew your license plates in person at your local OMV up to 60 days prior to expiration. If you'd prefer not to wait in line, you can mail your renewal application and a check or money order to the address shown on the reminder notice.

Renewing by Phone or Online

Depending upon where you live and what type of vehicle you drive, you might be able to renew your registration by phone or online. If you are eligible for these services, your reminder notice will contain instructions. If you think you are eligible for phone or online renewal and do not receive a reminder notice, call your local OMV for further instructions.

Fees

Fees for vehicle registration renewals depend on your location, the type of vehicle you have, and the method you use to renew. You can find a short listing of fees on the OMV Web site. For additional information, call the OMV at (877) DMV-LINE.

Once you complete the vehicle registration renewal process, you should receive your new tabs (registration decals) within approximately two weeks. If your tabs do not arrive, however, you can request free replacements by providing proof of payment to your local OMV within 60 days.
