Check Your Driver's License Status
Your Louisiana driving record includes information regarding any accident statements and traffic offenses on record, as well as your driver's license status and/or commercial driver's license (CDL) status.
Minor traffic violations are kept on record for three years and major traffic violations are on record for five years. All Driving While Intoxicated (DWI), Out-of-Service, and Vehicle Negligent Injury convictions are on record for 10 years.
The Importance of Checking Your Record
It's important to check out your driving record from time to time to make sure there are no inaccuracies. Incorrect information could cause higher insurance rates. It may even cost you a particular job opportunity, since more employers are conducting background checks that look at your driving record and criminal record to make decisions about your reliability.
Requests and Fees
It's easy to request your own driving record. However, when requesting a driving record for someone other than yourself, you must provide written authorization from that person in addition to the standard documentation.
Louisiana conveniently offers drivers the choice of ordering driver records online, by mail, or at certain Office of Motor Vehicle (OMV) locations.
Online Orders
To order your driving record online, first make sure you have a printer and valid credit or debit card. You'll be paying for the record and printing it yourself.
Visit the Louisiana Official Driving Records Online Web page, and have your driver's license handy. You'll be asked to enter your name, date of birth, and your license number and class, exactly as the information appears on your license.
You'll also be asked to enter your address, in which case you can enter the address you want the driving record mailed.
When you order your driving record online, you'll need to indicate if the reason for request pertains to employment, insurance, or address purposes, or if the record is for yourself.
The cost for a driving record ordered online is $17. This includes a $15 fee for the record itself and a $2 State Charge for electronic business.
Mail Orders
To order your driving record by mail, prepare a written request including your name, date of birth, sex, address, driver's license number, and the $15 fee in the form of a money order or certified check. Mail it to:
- Office of Motor Vehicles
- Attention: ODR
- P.O. Box 64886
- Baton Rouge, LA 70896
OMV Orders
If you'd rather obtain the driving record in person, you can do so at the Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Lake Charles, Monroe, or Shreveport OMV locations.
The fee is still $15, but you can pay by cash, money order, or certified check.
If you have any trouble ordering your driving record, Louisiana suggests completing an Office of Motor Vehicles Customer Inquiry.
