If you want to become a licensed motor vehicle dealer or salesman in Louisiana, you've come to the right place. The Unofficial DMV Guide has outlined everything you'll need to know to get started.

    Top Louisiana Motor Vehicle Commission

The Louisiana Motor Vehicle Commission (LMVC) is responsible for all licensing, investigations, dispute mediations, audits, and regulations related to motor vehicle dealers and dealerships.

Top Becoming a Motor Vehicle Dealer

In order to become a motor vehicle dealer in Louisiana, you must first become licensed.

Use the free Adobe Reader to view the Initial Application for License as an Administrator.

Along with the $1,500 fee per location, you must also submit the following with your application:

    • A list of names, addresses, and percentage of ownership for each owner, member, partner, director, trustee, and/or principal officer.
    • A copy of the assumed name certificate if you are doing business under a trade name. This certificate must be filed in the location's parish, or you won't be issued a license.
    • A certified or sworn financial statement made no more than 60 days prior to submitting the application.
    • A copy of Articles of Incorporation or Articles of Organization and all amendments.
    • Copies of sales materials, insurance policies, agreements, and anything else used when dealing with debt forgiveness or debt waiver agreements.
    • A biography of principals, including character references. (This doesn't apply if the company or subsidiary is publicly owned.)
    • A Board or Member Resolution signed by a Corporation, Trust, Limited Partnership, Limited Liability Partnership, or Limited Liability Company representative.

You'll find mailing information in our Dealer Forms section.

    License Renewals

Your license will expire on December 31 of each year. Therefore, it's necessary to submit the renewal application and fee before November 1.

You are not allowed to sell or give your license to anyone.

If you decide to change locations, you must notify the LMVC 30 days before the move. If you decide to stop doing business, you must notify the LMVC 30 days after you quit.

Top Becoming a Motor Vehicle Salesman/Agent

In order to become a motor vehicle salesman/agent in Louisiana, you must also become licensed.

Use the free Adobe Reader to view the Administrator Application for a Salesman/Agent. The application must be completed by both you and the dealer.

Along with the $75 fee, you must submit any documents pertaining to debt waivers or debt forgiveness. Obtain this information from your motor vehicle dealer.

You'll find mailing information in our Dealer Forms section.

Application dates are situational and vary from year to year. Contact the Commission Members for your specific date.
