Registration Renewals

If you're not good with dates, don't worry. You'll receive a reminder in the mail when it's time to renew your Kentucky registration.
For your convenience, you can renew your Kentucky registration in one of three ways: in person, by mail, or online.
Renew in Person
Aside from scheduling it into your day, renewing your Kentucky registration actually isn't a hassle.
All you need to do is head to your County Clerk's office with your renewal reminder (the one you received in the mail), your current registration card, proof of insurance, and the appropriate fees. (See below for fees.)
Renew by Mail
Renewing your Kentucky registration through the mail is much the same as doing it in person―you're just doing it from the comforts of home.
Gather up your renewal reminder, current registration card, proof of insurance, and the appropriate fees and mail it to your County Clerk's office.
Your new license plate or decal will arrive in about a week.
Renew Online
Renewing your Kentucky registration online is even more convenient than renewing by mail. However, you must meet certain criteria in order to be eligible for online registration renewal:
- Your registration can't be expired or past due.
- Your current address must be the same address in the system.
- Your license plate can't be personalized or special-issue.
- Your insurance company must participate in online registration renewal, or your up-to-date insurance information must already be in the County Clerk's system.
- You must own, and not lease, your vehicle.
When you renew your registration online you must use a Visa or MasterCard and you'll be charged a $5 convenience fee. This is in addition to renewal fees. Your registration will be processed and you should receive your new decals and certificate within a week or so.
Fees
DMV.ORG can't pinpoint your Kentucky registration renewal fees for you because they vary from owner to owner. We can tell you that your fees will be based on factors such as your vehicle's age and the county in which you live.
The amount of your renewal fees includes vehicle property tax, too.
