History of DMV

The Kansas Division of Motor Vehicles {DMV} is overseen by a larger State government entity: the Kansas Department of Revenue.
Kansas DMV
The Kansas DMV's main goals are to serve and assist the 1.8 million licensed drivers, and the owners of the state's 2.5 million registered vehicles.
The DMV's main function is driver's-license-and-ID-related. The DMV is here to help you apply for, renew, change or update your driver's license. The DMV keeps accurate track of the driving records and the details they involve, for all of the licensed drivers in Kansas. Finally, the DMV also oversees all aspects of motor vehicle registration and titling and keeps track of the state's motor vehicle dealers.
Kansas Highway Patrol
Back in the 1920s and 30s, criminals discovered that their work was made easier by incorporating the use of the automobile.
In 1933, then-Governor Alfred Landon, and Kansas Highway Department Attorney Wint Smith created a special force of ten motor vehicle inspectors. It was 1937 when the Kansas State Legislature recognized the Kansas Highway Patrol as an independent law enforcement agency with its own jurisdiction of law. At that time, there were a total of 45 troopers in the Kansas CHP, all of whom were busy enforcing traffic, driver's licenses, and vehicle laws.
The Kansas CHP has grown and changed over the years, but CHP officers have remained the constant guardians of the highways. The Kansas CHP has always been one of the first law enforcement agencies to respond to emergencies and is always on watch, with the safety of Kansas drivers first among the officers' priorities.
