Driver Education

FIND A LOCAL DRIVING SCHOOL

Powered by Superpages.com

Although driver education courses aren't required to get your instruction permit in Kansas, taking a driver's education course either through your high school or a private company can increase your driving knowledge, help you to feel more secure behind the wheel, and possibly lower insurance rates.

A driver's education course covers the information needed for the written as well as the driving tests required by the DMV. For the written test you'll need to know traffic laws and be able to identify signs by their shape, color and symbol.

Driver's education courses consist of classroom instruction and driving time with a licensed instructor. Topics covered in the classroom include:

  • The Drivers License Handbook
  • Rules of the road
  • Adverse weather conditions
  • Risks of driving
  • Basic skills of vehicle operation
  • Legal issues and accountabilities

Taking a driver's education course does not guarantee you a license. You still need to take and pass the state written and driving exams.

Please note: Online driver education courses do not meet the Kansas requirements for a driver's license. The only programs that are approved by the State of Kansas for Driver Education purposes are programs offered through a local, accredited school district that have been approved by the Department of Education. If you're unsure whether or not a program has been approved by the Department of Education you may contact them at (785) 296-8107 or call the Kansas Division of Motor Vehicles at (785) 296-3963 or e-mail jpeterson@ksde.org.
