    Low Mileage Auto Insurance Discounts

Compare Insurance Rates in 3 Easy Steps

    1. Start Your Quote:

      Page Overview
    • Qualify for a Low Mileage Discount
    • Pay-as-You-Drive Car Insurance
    • Other Auto Insurance Discounts
    • Additional Car Insurance Information
If you've recently switched jobs and started working from home, or relocated into a city with convenient public transportation options, you should look into the possibility of qualifying for a low mileage auto insurance discount.

Qualify for a Low Mileage Discount

Insurance rates are based on risk. The lower the risk your auto insurance company perceives you to be, the lower your car insurance rates. Under this logic, lower annual miles on your car means you have a lower chance of being involved in a car accident, thus making you a low-risk driver.

The definition of low mileage varies with each provider, usually falling somewhere between 7,500 and 15,000 miles per year. If your annual mileage rate falls within these figures, you should inquire with your insurance provider about a low mileage discount.

Even if you're unsure of your exact annual mileage, you should consider looking into a low mileage discount if:

    • You're a senior driver who is retired. No driving to and from work equates into less annual miles.
    • You move closer to your place of work, or begin a home-based business.
    • You purchase a second car for running errands. When obtaining coverage be sure your car insurance company is made aware that this is not your primary vehicle.
    • You join a car pool, reducing your driving to work maybe once or twice a week.

    Pay-as-You-Drive Car Insurance

Pay-as-you-drive auto insurance is a relatively new idea in the United States that for years has been a popular option in Europe.

The basic premise of this policy is that you pay your car insurance provider a per-mile rate, making it ideal for low mileage drivers. Under this plan buying auto insurance is similar to buying gas―the less you drive, the less you spend, or vice versa.

But, because this option is relatively new in the United States, the number of providers offering pay-as-you-drive insurance is currently limited.

    Other Auto Insurance Discounts

Besides low mileage, there are many other ways to qualify for an auto insurance discount:

    • Get good grades. If you're a student with at least a B average some providers will reward your scholastic efforts with a reduced car insurance rate.
    • Have a good credit rating. Statistics prove that drivers with good credit ratings are traditionally low-risk drivers.
    • Have a clean driving record. The less number of traffic violations on your driving record, the lower your insurance rate.
    • Carry multiple policies. Many providers offer discounts for bundling different insurance policies such as homeowners, rental, and fire.
    • Have vehicle safety features. Air bags, automatic seat belts, and anti-lock brakes are looked upon favorably by car insurance companies.
    • Install anti-theft deterrents. Some providers offer discounts for car alarms and tracking devices.

Be sure to inquire with your car insurance company about discounts. Some agents might forget to mention them or incorrectly assume you're not eligible for certain discounts.
