Accessory Coverage For Motorcycles

Motorcycles are often considered a symbol of independence, individuality, and uniqueness. With this in mind, it is not surprising that many riders choose to customize their bikes by installing various accessories and parts.

If you have custom parts on your motorcycle, you might want to consider adding accessory coverage to your motorcycle insurance coverage to help repair or replace these parts in case they get damaged.

What Is Covered?

Accessory coverage for motorcycles―also known as Custom Parts and Equipment (CPE) coverage―covers equipment and accessories added to a motorcycle after it has left the factory floor. Examples of motorcycle accessories include, but are not limited to:

  • Sidecars.
  • Trike conversion kits.
  • Antennas, audio devices, and various other electronic equipment.
  • Motorcycle trailers (pulled behind the motorcycle).
  • Custom paint, plating, and exhaust systems.
  • Plow and mower blades.
  • Safety apparel, such as helmets and leather apparel.

What exactly is covered in your policy depends heavily on your motorcycle insurance company. Some companies may not offer the same types of coverage as other companies. Keeping solid communication open with your motorcycle insurance agent and studying your policy will go a long way toward knowing the details of your accessory coverage.

NOTE: Because you are adding or replacing factory-installed parts, it is a good idea to document your custom parts as much as you possibly can. It is recommended that you:

  • Keep all receipts for your parts.
  • Photograph your custom parts before and after you have them installed on your bike.

Benefits of Purchasing Additional CPE

Generally speaking, most motorcycle insurance companies offer limited amounts of accessory coverage through comprehensive and collision coverages, adding value to what are already very important types of motorcycle insurance coverages. Collision coverage covers damages to your motorcycle caused by collisions with another object―be it another vehicle, mailbox, or various other stationary object―comprehensive motorcycle insurance covers the cost of damages due to vandalism, theft, and natural disasters such fire or flood.

It is important to keep in mind, however, that custom parts and equipment coverage through your collision and comprehensive coverages are limited. Adding separate CPE coverage to your policy can extend your accessory coverage much further for a relatively low price, in most cases.

Purchasing Accessory Coverage

Buying accessory coverage for your bike can be as easy as calling your motorcycle insurance agent.

If you are in the market for a new motorcycle insurance policy, you might be able to factor in the cost of accessory coverage towards your motorcycle insurance quote.

Custom parts and equipment coverage is generally one of the least expensive types of motorcycle insurance coverage. However, prices may vary among different insurance companies.

Additional Types of Motorcycle Insurance

In addition to accessory motorcycle insurance, other types of coverage available for motorcycles insurance policies include:
