Mature drivers benefit from many discounts, but you will need to ask for them. Not every company offers all of these discounts, but some do so there might be potential for significant savings.

    Top Mature Driver Discount

Some insurance companies offer a 5% discount simply for being aged 50 to 55 and older. Others, like AARP Hartford, offer overall lower rates in the first place. Call your agent to see if your company offers a mature driver discount.

    Top Mature Driving Safety Course

Not every company offers a simple age discount to senior citizens. Some only offer a discount for taking a mature driving course.

Offered through online or in-person classes or senior centers, these short courses teach refreshers on defensive driving, traffic laws, and how to compensate for age-related physical changes.

Most insurers offer a 5% discount for three years for taking the class. Usually, you must be at least 55 years old.

Keep in mind, if the insurance company offers a mature driver discount, it might also give you another 5% discount for taking the safety class.

    Top Retiree Discounts

Because insurance companies calculate your commute, your regular insurance premiums could be higher when you're driving to and from work each day.

If you are retired from your job, you’re probably driving less. Some insurance companies offer around a 5% discount for retirees, so ask your agent if a retiree driver’s discount is available.

    Top Personal Injury Protection Discounts

Many states offer a discount (the standard 5%) off the Personal Injury Protection portion of auto insurance. This generally starts at age 65. Ask your insurance agent for details.
