Page OverviewMaintaining a spotless driving record is a plus to your wallet. Not only does it keep your insurance premiums low, but, depending on your carrier, it could also earn you a safe driver discount (some providers refer to it as a good driver discount). Massachusetts has even mandated safe driver discounts into law, under the Safe Driver Insurance Plan.
Top Good Driver Incentives
Each carrier adheres to a different incentive policy, based on your driving record. Some carriers, for instance, offer a 2% discount for every year you avoid an at-fault accident, topping out at 20%.
Others gauge safe driving discounts on driving records over three- and five-year increments, rewarding modest discounts for three consecutive years of safe driving, and maximum discounts (usually 20%) for five straight years of exemplary driving.

When determining if you qualify, keep in mind that each carrier has a different definition for safe driving. For some it means avoiding at-fault accidents, and for others it means having a record free of at-fault collisions and traffic violations like speeding, reckless driving, and DUI/DWI.
If you own a driving record checkered with violations, all hope for this discount is not lost. Some carriers will grant you safe driver status even if you've had a DUI/DWI conviction. But to qualify you must show proof of a spotless driving record for an extended period of time, usually at or around 10 years. This again, however, varies with each carrier.
