Registration Renewals

If you're a Hoosier, you have five methods to renew your registration.
Renewing by Mail
To renew by mail, simply complete the renewal notice you received in the mail. Then, enclose it with your payment and send it to the address listed on the form. Allow one to three weeks to have your registration processed.
Didn't receive your registration? Call the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) at (317) 233-6000 and request that one be sent to you.
Renewing by Phone
Call (877) 4NEWBMV to renew by phone. Be sure to have the personal identification number from your renewal card nearby, as well as your payment information. Your registration will be mailed within seven business days.
Renewing in Person
To renew the old-fashioned way, head to a license agency. Make sure you have your registration renewal form, previous year's registration, or license plate number with you. Additionally, you must provide proof of insurance, and be able to verify your Social Security number.
Renewing Online
For those who enjoy a more modern approach, you may renew online. However, be sure you qualify to do so. If you qualify, have your Social Security number, license plate number, and insurance information handy. Then, just follow the simple instructions to complete your renewal.
It will take at least seven business days to receive your renewal.
Renewing at Self-service Terminals
If none of the other options appeal to you, try renewing your registration at one of the 36 self-service terminals located throughout the state. The terminals look like automated teller machines. Just follow the instructions, and the terminal will walk you through the renewal process. Have your Social Security number, license plate number, and insurance information with you.
The terminals accept MasterCard and Visa debit or credit cards, and most terminals are available 24 hours a day.
Renewal Fees
Your registration cost will vary due to a variety of factors. A good way to get an estimate of your cost is to use Indiana's QuickQuote system.
Registration Expiration
Registrations need to be renewed every year. To try to reduce lines, Indiana uses a staggered registration, meaning that the registrations will expire at different times of the month. The state provides a list of expiration dates, which are based on the first two letters of the vehicle owner's last name.
You may renew your registration up to six months before the expiration date.
Emissions Testing
Residents of Lake or Porter counties whose vehicles are due to be tested for emission levels will need to provide proof their vehicles passed the testing, including the testing verification number. See our emissions section for more details.
Out-of-State Renewals
Indiana residents who are temporarily living outside of the state may renew their registration by mail. To do so, provide your forwarding address to the post office. Your registration renewal card will then be mailed to your temporary address. If you want the renewal sent to your temporary address, be sure to include this information with your renewal card.
Important Reminder
Keep in mind that you must have your new stickers or plates attached to your vehicle in order to be in compliance with regulations. Just having them sit on your kitchen table doesn't qualify.
