    The DMV Written Knowledge Test

    The written knowledge exam tests your knowledge of the IN traffic laws and safe driving as explained in the Indiana BMV driving manual. It is made up of multiple-choice questions.

    To allow time to take the test, you must be at your local IN BMV office no later than 1 hour before closing.

    If you fail the test, you must wait 1 business day before you can retake it.

    Who Has to Take the Test?

    The IN written test isn't just for teenagers! New residents and some current IN residents must also take the written test.

    You must pass the Indiana BMV written knowledge test if you are:

    • Applying for:
      • A learner's permit.
      • An IN driver's license and are already licensed in another state or country.
      • A chauffeur's or public passenger chauffeur's license.
    • Renewing your IN driver's license AND:
      • You have at least 6 points on your driving record.
        • If you're under 21 years old, you must take the test to renew if you have any points on your record.
        OR
      • Your license has been expired for longer than 180 days.
    If you're an active-duty military member, or a spouse or a dependent of one, you must pass the written exam IF:
    • Your Indiana driver's license has been expired for over 180 days.
      AND
    • You have been back in IN for longer than 90 days.
