Compare Insurance Rates in 3 Easy Steps

    1. Start Your Quote:

If you are in the military and temporarily residing outside of Indiana, you don't need to worry about your driver's license expiring.

The state gives you 90 days after your date of discharge to renew your license without any sort of penalty. Just make sure to bring your proof of discharge to the license agency. For more information about renewing your license, please see our Renewing Your License section.

Indiana also lets you renew by mail if you prove that you are in the military on active duty outside the state. Submit a complete application for renewal along with the required fee, and a letter from your commanding officer.

You can request an application or more information from the address below. When you renew by mail, your renewal license will not have a photograph on it. Also, while you are waiting for your renewal, your current license remains valid for 30 days beyond the expiration date.

    • c/o Photo Exempt Request

On the other hand, if you are just temporarily residing in the state due to military service, in order for you to not be liable for any sort of excise tax during vehicle registration, you will need to fill out State Form 46402: Affidavit for Military Exemption from Excise Tax.
