    Top Sight

    • To receive a license without any restrictions, you must have 20/40 acuity or better in both eyes.

    • If your best corrected acuity is 20/40 or better in one eye, and 20/50 to blind in the other, you must drive a vehicle equipped with outside rearview mirrors.

    • If your best corrected acuity is 20/50 in both eyes, you must drive with glasses or contacts.

    • If you have one eye with a corrected acuity of 20/50 and 20/70 to blind in the other you must drive wearing glasses or contacts, operate a vehicle with outside rearview mirrors, and only drive during daytime.

    • If both eyes have a corrected acuity of 20/70, you can only drive during daytime while wearing glasses or contacts in a vehicle with outside rearview mirrors, and carry proof of having normal peripheral vision.

    Bioptic Driver's License

    To qualify you must have:

    • A visual acuity through the bioptic system of 20/40 or better.
    • Have enough color vision to discern traffic and brake lights.
    • Own a peripheral visual field of 120 degrees total in one or both eyes.

    There are no restrictions for hearing impaired drivers.

    Top Seizures

    You must be seizure free for one year and have the condition tempered by medication, in order to receive a driver's license.

    Top Aging Drivers

    All drivers 75 years old or older must renew their licenses every three years.

    The Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) will accept calls from family members, the courts, and the police. If you suspect a driver of being unfit to operate a vehicle contact, if possible, immediate family members. Otherwise call the BMV at (317) 233-6000 with the driver's license plate number.
