License Plate FAQs
We cover the subject of license plates in our license plates section. However, here are the answers to some commonly asked questions about license plates.
Where should I place the stickers?
That's simple. The month sticker goes in the upper left-hand corner of the plate, and the year sticker goes in the upper right-hand corner.
How do I apply for disability plates or placards?
There isn't a short answer for this, but you can find out how to apply by reading our Drivers with Disabilities section.
My plates were stolen. How do I replace them?
If your plates were stolen (or you just misplaced them), you'll need to take State Form 37135 to a law enforcement agency, where an officer will complete the form. Then, bring the form with you to a license agency with proper identification, such as your driver's license. You'll receive replacement plates for $9.
My plates are in poor condition. How do I replace them?
Just go to a license agency with proper identification, such as your driver's license. You'll complete a form, pay a $9 fee, and receive your replacement plates.
I'm tired of my boring plate design. Where can I find more information about specialty plates?
Glad you asked. Visit our license plates section for complete information on this subject.
What's the cost of temporary permits?
It depends on the time limit. The cost for 96-hour permits is $8.75, while it's $16.75 for 30-day permits.
When will I get new plates?
Unless you request a different plate sooner, you'll receive new standard plates every four years. You'll replace your specialty plates every five years.
How much do license plates cost?
That's a great question, but unfortunately there isn't a single answer. License plate costs are included in your registration fees. And those fees will vary depending on a number of factors, such as where you live and what type and year of vehicle you drive.
Of course, if you want specialty plates, you'll be paying extra fees.
Does the Indiana BMV issue antique plates?
Yes. For more information about the plates and the application process, read our License Plates & Placards article.
Do I have to surrender my Indiana license plates after relocating to a new state?
