History of DMV
The primary goal of the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (IN BMV) is to provide "professional and efficient service in the licensing of drivers, the registration and titling of vehicles, the collection and distribution of taxes and the management of records related to these functions."
To that end, the IN BMV has 140 license agencies scattered throughout the state to meet your needs. At the branches, you may apply for a license, receive or renew your registration, title your vehicle, and take care of most other vehicle business. You don't have to go to your nearest branch, either: any branch will be able to assist you, no matter where you live in Indiana.
All full-service branches are open Tuesday through Saturday, and are closed Sunday and Monday. The hours for these branches are as follows:
- Tuesday: 8:30 a.m.- 7 p.m.
- Wednesday: 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
- Thursday: 8:30 a.m.- 5 p.m.
- Friday: 8:30 a.m.- 5 p.m.
- Saturday: 8:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m.
The Bureau of Motor Vehicles has developed a Branch Efficiency page as another tool to help customers handle their bureau transactions as quickly as possible. On the page, you will find the average wait times for every license agency in the state.
You may also compare the wait times at your favorite branch to the statewide average for all branches.
Additionally, you may check the branches with the fastest and slowest wait times at a glance. The agencies with the 20 longest times also have their average wait time per day of the week listed. You can easily compare these times with those of the three nearest branches. Maps to these nearby branches are also available.
Tuesdays are usually the busiest day at the branches. However, the IN BMV strives to allow you to complete your transaction within 20 minutes.
Indiana also has eight reinstatement agencies to go to when you need to have your license reinstated.
Additionally, the state has four dealer/fleet service agencies specifically to address the needs of its dealer and fleet customers. Although most license agencies can also handle these matters, these branches provide both drop-off and walk-in service.
Lastly, the state has set up 34 self-service terminals throughout Indiana where drivers may renew their registration. Most of these terminals are accessible 24 hours a day.
