Page OverviewWhat Is 511?
Motorists who frequently travel for business or pleasure will find it helpful to take advantage of the 511 service, also known as America's Traveler Information Telephone Number. In 2000, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) officially designated 511, as the single traffic information telephone number for the United States. It tells you about weather-related emergencies, road conditions, and local construction projects.
Where to Use 511
Although the 511 service is still under development in Illinois, it is currently active in 28 states. If you are traveling in a state that uses the 511 service, simply dial 511 on your phone.
Responsible Cell Phone Use
Although the 511 service can be a valuable resource for travelers, it's a good idea to always pull over to a safe location before making the call. Many states have laws against talking on your phone while driving.
