If your vehicle registration card or license plates are lost, stolen, or damaged beyond recognition, you should obtain duplicates through the Illinois Secretary of State (SOS) as soon as possible.
Driving your vehicle without your license plates affixed can be a red flag for law enforcement officers. If you drive without your plates, the chances are high that you will be pulled over, receive a traffic citation, face fines, and possibly have your vehicle impounded.
If your registration ID card is lost or includes incorrect information, you should also request a replacement. While Illinois does not require all vehicles to be accompanied by the registration ID card while on the road, most neighboring states do require them. The Illinois Secretary of State (SOS) recommends that your keep your current and correct vehicle registration card in your car at all times.
If your license plates or vehicle registration documents have been stolen, along with requesting a replacement with the IL SOS, you should file a police report with your local law enforcement agency.

You can get replacement Illinois registration papers and replacement license plates for your vehicle from your local IL SOS office.
For most types of replacement requests, you'll need to complete the Application for Vehicle Transaction (Form VSD 190), which is available at the Secretary of State office, by mail, or online. This form allows you to replace your registration ID card, registration sticker, or license plate or plates.

Replacing Your Registration ID Card in Illinois
You must typically request a duplicate registration ID card through the Illinois Secretary of State (SOS) whenever you:
- Find there is incorrect information on your vehicle registration card.
- Change your name.
- Modify the ownership/title on your vehicle.
- Change your corporate name or form a partnership (for company vehicles).
