Replacing a Lost Registration in Illinois

Your registration is proof that your vehicle is street legal in Illinois. But what if your ID card was lost or stolen?

Fortunately, there is an application process you can complete with the Illinois Secretary of State (SOS) if you need to replace your registration ID card.

Duplicate IL Registration ID Cards

If your Illinois vehicle registration has been lost, stolen, or damaged, you can apply to get a duplicate registration ID by one of two ways:

If you think that your stickers or registration ID card have been stolen, it's highly recommended to contact your local police department and file a report.

Online

To apply for a duplicate registration online, visit the SOS’ Electronic Registration and Title (ERT) system. You’ll be prompted to complete the online version of the state’s Application for Vehicle Transaction(s) (Form VSD 190).

Be prepared to provide your personal and vehicle info, as well as payment for the $3 replacement fee.

By Mail

If you don’t want to complete the replacement process for your registration online, you can also send your application in by mail.

To do this, you will need to:

  • Go to any Secretary of State office location to pick up an Application for Vehicle Transaction(s) (Form VSD 190).
    • This form is NOT available online.
  • Mail the form and payment for the $3 replacement fee to:

Replacing Plate Stickers in IL

If you need to obtain duplicate Illinois month/year stickers, you can apply for a duplicate:

  • Online.
  • In person.

Details for each option are below.

Online

License plate stickers in Illinois can be replaced online through the SOS’ License Plates/Stickers Replacement service. Simply log in and:

  • Enter your registration ID and PIN.
    • You can find both of these on the renewal notice that you received either by mail or by e-mail before your last renewal. If you don’t have this notice any longer, call the Public Inquiry Division at (800) 252-8980 to obtain your registration ID and PIN.
  • Complete the online Application for Vehicle Transaction(s) (Form VSD 190).
  • Pay the $20 replacement fee.

In Person

You can also choose to obtain a duplicate IL plate sticker in person your local SOS office. Be prepared to:

  • Fill out an Application for Vehicle Transaction(s) (Form VSD 190).
    • This form is NOT available online.
  • Provide any identification or vehicle information requested.
  • Pay the $20 replacement fee.
