Renewal Methods

The Illinois Secretary of State office sends out renewal notices each year before your vehicle registration expires. If you are eligible to renew online, your notice will include a PIN number and a renewal code. The transaction fee to renew online is $1.75 in addition to the registration fee.

You can also renew by phone by calling (866) 545-9609 with your credit card number handy. This transaction also incurs a $1.75 processing fee.

If you wish, you may instead renew in person at your local Secretary of State office or by mail. If you choose to renew by mail, sign the bottom of your renewal form or write a letter providing your name, address, license plate number, and full vehicle description, along with a copy of your current registration card, and submit the appropriate fees by check or money order to:

  • Secretary of State
  • Vehicle Services Department
  • 501 S. 2nd St., Room 011
  • Springfield, IL 62756-6666

What is a VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)?

Changes

If you have changed your name or address since your last registration or renewal, you'll need to visit your local Secretary of State office with the proper documentation to inform the office of the changes. To change your name on your vehicle registration, you'll have to change your name on your driver's license and title first.

You can use an online form to change your address during times other than your registration period.

Same-Day Service

Most renewals take 30 days to process. If you need your renewal sooner, you may request a temporary registration permit, valid for 90 days, from your local Secretary of State office, or you can apply for same-day service from a Secretary of State office, a participating financial institution, or a currency exchange office.
