Changing Your Name on Your Drivers License or ID Card

Unfortunately, there is no way to change the name on your Iowa driver license or ID online. You must visit your nearest driver license station in person to complete the necessary paperwork.

No appointment is needed, although you may want to call ahead to confirm the station's business hours. In smaller Iowa counties, the drivers license stations are often only open one or two days per week.

You must bring the original documentation of your name change with you to the driver license station. The Iowa Department of Transportation is unable to accept faxes or photocopies of documents. Acceptable proof of a legal name change can include:

    • A court-ordered name change document that contains your full legal name, date of birth, and the applicable court seal.
    • Your marriage license or certificate.

    Fees

There is a $1 administrative charge for receiving a new license after a name change. You can also change your address at this time for no additional fee.

Changing Your Name on a Vehicle Registration and Title

If you own a vehicle in the state of Iowa, you'll want to make sure your registration and title information is updated as soon as possible to reflect your new name.

To do this, you'll need to bring your driver license reflecting your new name with your current registration and title to your nearest county treasurer's office. You'll complete a new Application of Title and/or Registration for a Vehicle (Form #411007) with updated mileage information for vehicles with a model year of 1998 or newer.

At this time, you'll also be given the option of adding or removing owners from the title and changing your address if necessary.

    Fees

There is a $15 fee to have a title issued in your new name, plus an additional $10 processing fee if you have a current car loan and need to obtain documentation from the lienholder in order to receive the new title.

There is no additional charge to receive an updated registration, although you may be asked to renew your registration if it is close to the expiration date.
