Name Change in IowaPage Overview
If you change your legal name, you only have 30 days to notify the Department of Transportation. You must appear in person at your nearest driver license station to complete the necessary paperwork.
No appointment is needed, although you may want to call ahead to confirm the station's business hours.
You must bring the original documentation of your name change with you to the driver license station. The Iowa Department of Transportation is unable to accept faxes or photocopies of documents. Acceptable proof of a legal name change can include:
- A court-ordered name change document that contains your full legal name, date of birth, and the applicable court seal.
- A divorce decree stipulating your name change.
- Your marriage license or certificate.
There is a $10 charge for receiving a new license after a name change.
If you own a vehicle in the state of Iowa, you'll want to make sure your registration and title information is updated as soon as possible to reflect your new name.
To do this, you'll need to bring your driver license reflecting your new name with your current registration and title to your nearest county treasurer's office.
At this time, you'll also be given the option of adding or removing owners from the title and changing your address if necessary.
